Portuguese Design

It offers protection in Portugal.

The applications can be simple or multiple:

A simple application is composed of a single object, or of a set of products that cannot be separated (such as a set of draughts, or a pack of cards).
A multiple application can include up to 100 products, as long as they belong to the same class considered in the Locarno International Classification. Each of the objects included in a multiple registration must fulfill the industrial design requirements. The different products are treated independently, and so registration can be granted or refused for only some of the products that comprise a multiple application.

The procedure only includes a formal examination, and it is possible to file an opposition against the design after registration.

The registration is valid for 5 years, starting from the date of the application, and can be renewed for further periods of 5 years each up to a maximum of 25 years.

Community Design

With one single registration all the member states of the European Union are automatically covered.

One application may include as many products as desired, as long as all of them are included in the same class.

The procedure only includes a formal examination, and it is possible to request a declaration of invalidity against the design after registration.

The registration is valid for 5 years, starting from the date of the application, and can be renewed for further periods of 5 years each up to a maximum of 25 years.

International Design

It is a unified design filing procedure that covers several countries.

An international design application is equivalent to a design application in all contracting states designated in the application.

The procedure only includes a formal examination.
